Educational Resources for Teaching Nurses Working in Long-Term Care
The Clinical Leadership Training Program is intended to build leadership excellence among clinical leaders working in long-term care, through workshops, facilitators guide and PowerPoint training modules.
Background
The Clinical Leadership Training Program was developed collaboratively by Algonquin College and the Ontario Centre for Learning, Research and Innovation in Long-Term Care at Bruyère. In-person workshops have been held through Ontario for nurses working in long-term care over the past several years. These sessions provide foundational knowledge about leadership theory, conflict resolution skills and support nurses in developing a mentorship agreement, towards the aim of professional development. There are five modules, each of which focusing on a different aspect of building leadership excellence.

Facilitator’s Guide – This PDF offers facilitators of Clinical Leadership Training several learning activities that may support them in delivering all five of the below modules.
Module 1 – This module introduces the concept of clinical leadership and reviews how leadership theory has evolved. It is also designed to have participants begin to reflect on personal leadership strategies and identify personal leadership strengths.
Module 2 – This module focuses on how transformational leadership can be practiced by nurses in long-term care. Participants are guided through a more formal self-assessment and given tools to develop a leadership plan.
Module 3 – This module focuses on effective listening and methods to improve communication and teamwork. It also addresses key elements of delegation in the LTC context.
Module 4 – This module focuses on understanding and applying principles of conflict resolution to effective communication strategies. It asks participants to generate solutions to LTC-specific scenarios using principles of conflict resolution and negotiation.
Module 5 – This module focuses on skills associated with being a mentor and mentee. The module addresses strategies for finding a mentor, defining the relationship, and preparing for the process of mentorship.
