The 1, 2, 3, Move Approach to Lifts, Transfers, and Repositioning
The Ontario Centres for Learning, Research and Innovation in Long-Term Care (CLRI) have developed several resources to assist long-term care (LTC) clinical staff in reducing the chance of injury while lifting, transfering, and repositioning residents.
The resources that have been developed include several online training modules. The first of the modules was developed for clinical staff to complete directly. The second module serves as a “Trainer’s Toolkit” and can be used as a practical resource for educators to use in training sessions for clinical staff.

This module focuses on safe body mechanics and safe work practice principles for lifts, transfers, and repositioning techniques to reduce injuries to both residents and staff LTC. This module can be completed by clinical staff (registered nurses, personal support workers). This module is related to topics listed as part of the mandatory training requirements for LTC homes in Ontario. The length of this module is ±40 minutes, and is a prerequisite to the Trainer’s Toolkit below.
The Trainer’s Toolkit is a resource designed for LTC homes to provide guidance to their educators in the development of a practical session for safe lifts, transfers, and repositioning within the home. Participants will then have the opportunity to apply/practice what they have learned from Module 1 during this session. The content within the trainer’s resource consists of general information and templates that can be applied to any health care setting.
