Long-Term Care Education Series (Module 9)
This module on dementia in long-term care (LTC) is based on the Champlain Dementia Network’s 2009/2010 booklet, “What you need to know to work with persons with dementia: A primer for those starting to work in dementia care.” It can be completed by clinical staff (registered nurses, personal support workers), allied health, and volunteers. This topic is listed as part of the mandatory training requirements for LTC homes in Ontario.
The length of this module is approximately 30 minutes. The module begins with an overview of dementia, the 8 A’s of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Four different scenarios divide the module, each narrated by a different care staff who provides ideas, approaches, and strategies that LTC staff can use and adapt when they are providing care to residents living with dementia.
The module was funded by the Government of Ontario through the Ontario Centres for Learning, Research and Innovation in Long-Term Care. The views expressed in this video are the views of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect those of the Province of Ontario.
